Paso Robles Fire, with the assistance of the San Luis Obispo County Fire Department, evacuated two people and a dog who were stranded on an island just south of the Niblick Bridge in Paso Robles, Calif., on Friday. The original spillway was destroyed in storms in 2017, triggering evacuations for people living downstream. ![]() The department first released water from the new spillway in April 2019 it hasn't been used since. The water is being released from Oroville Dam over the newly constructed spillway. The Kern River in the Southern Sierra spilled over its banks Friday, flooding nearby communities, including parts of Kernville, a town about 50 miles northeast of Bakersfield. PG&E said it hopes to have most customers with their lights back on by Friday evening, though it may take longer to restore power to some. PG&E said damage to electric transmission lines was the primary reason for the outages and that damages to distribution poles, power lines and other equipment were also contributing factors. "Transmission and local distribution crews and contractors are supporting restoration efforts, with 17 4-man crews working in Monterey County alone," the utility company said in an emailed statement.
